Vandana Shiva, environmental activist and food sovereignity advocate, gives voice to Rilke’s poem in our animated short film. Thanks Vandana!

A poem by Rainer Maria Rilke, read by Vandana Shiva, collectively animated by @the.impossible.future & presented by Daniel Wahl

The first time I heard Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem ‘Du Dunkelnder Grund’ was when I co-facilitated a training for educators in ‘The Work That Reconnects’ with Joanna Macy in the mountains North of Madrid in 2003.

In her early career, Joanna had translated Rilke’s ‘Book of Hours’ into English. During the training Joanna shared this remarkable poem in her own voice which has the resonant vibrational quality of a true Dharma teacher. I still remember how Rilke’s lines struck me.

Ever since, this poem has been with me, like a prayer. I have sat in many council circles and participated in many ceremonies, during which — out of silence and as if requested by the Earth herself — I felt moved to share this poem. …

If we want to create healthy economies that protect rather than destroy local ecosystems, we will need to rewrite international trade rules in ways that include the social and ecological costs of production and consumptions, as well as trade. We need to protect local economies from ‘cheap’ imports made possible by hidden subsidies, externalising true costs, and outsourcing production (exploiting international inequality).

Re-localising and re-regionalising economics — while maintaining international collaboration and fair trade — creates jobs and community resilience. …

Curated by Daniel Wahl for Schumacher College

I was a student on the MSc in Holistic Science at Schumacher College in 2001–2002. For the last 4 years I have been teaching on the MA in Ecological Design Thinking, and this year I started teaching on the MA in Regenerative Economics.

I only had one 2-hour conversation session with the students. We covered a lot of ground. I curated the reading list below based on my notes from that dialogue to offer the students pathways to dive deeper into the subjects their questions raised or my my answers referred to.

Sharing my recommended reading suggestions to the MA in Ecological Design Thinking led to a lot of positive feedback from around the world. …

Daniel Wahl, Schumacher College, 2020

There are certain rhythms and recurring patterns that mark the passing of the years for me. Teaching on the MA in Ecological Design Thinking at Schumacher College is one of them. I have been teaching on the course for the last 4 years and really enjoy this regular reconnection with my own alma mater. The 18 months I spent at Schumacher College between 2001 and 2003 doing the Masters in Holistic Science and working as a volunteer and facilitator there were among the most transformative and intense period of my life so far. …

Daniel Wahl in conversation with Alex Pryor

On September 10th, 2020, I had a great conversation with Alex Pryor who I was introduced to after my book launch tour in Brazil (2019). He and his wife have since visited Mallorca and we have become friends. When I recently watched a 2013 TEDx talk by Alex in Spanish I was struck how he was speaking about so many of the core messages — as I would see it — that I included in ‘Designing Regenerative Cultures’.

There is great alignment between my own work and his dynamic, systemic, flow thinking and the intuitive, heart-felt knowing he uses to guide his rational and systemic analysis of how a business can be of service to people and planet. …

Our current economic and monetary systems are structurally dysfunctional and at best serve a few (for a while) while more and more people share less and less. Under no circumstances will they deliver a healthy, meaningful and happy life for all. On a crowded planet with failing ecosystems we have to learn that out-competing others while destroying the planetary life-support systems is not an evolutionary success strategy. Win-lose games in the long run turn into lose-lose games. Yet there is another way! …

Michel Bauwens & Daniel Wahl in conversation

On September 9th, 2020 I had the pleasure of catching up with Michel Bauwens who’s work I have been following and appreciating for years. I first saw him speak at a Social Innovation Summit of the Skoll Foundation during People’s Summit of the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012 and finally met him at the R3.0 Conference in Amsterdam in 2018.

As usual I initially invite Michel to share a little bit about his own story. …

(Translation into Russian by Daria Les — read original here)

“Calling for new ways of doing and being that will regenerate healthy ecosystems, create community climate resilience, and rebuild an equitable and just world that prioritizes qualities of relationship. Daniel Christian Wahl advocates addressing causes rather than symptoms, and shifting our focus from competitive scarcity towards collaborative abundance as an enabler of planetary healing. This means reconnecting and embodying our intimacy with an animate Earth, requiring unprecedented cooperation and deep care for life. …
